Course Description:   Basic Counseling: Skills and Technique Course focuses on the development of counseling skills through insrtuction and experiential exercises where students are required to do recorded practice sessions. The emphasis is on technique and skills that includes development of a treatment alliance, active listening, reflection, formulation of questions, and confronting barriers to treatment and personal biases.

 

This syllabus is provided to give students ideas on what to expect from this course. Outlined in this syllabus are the responsibilities of the instructor as he conducts the class, the course content, tentative schedule of classes and assignments, and grading. It also outlines the students’ part in promoting learning and discipline during the term.

 

Note:   

  • The instructor reserves the right to adjust the course schedule and content during the term in order to accurately reflect the progress being made in the class which may result in modifications to assignment and exam dates and course content.
  • Students are expected to delete recorded counseling sessions from all personal recording devices once counseling sessions have been reviewed and feedback has been provided to the student.

 

  1. Student Learning Outcomes

            At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Examine the philospy and rationale of counseling and helping skills to identify appropriate skills and techniques for implementation within a counseling setting.
  2. Demonstrate ability to implement foundational counseling skills to effectively engage individuals seeking assistance in a therapeutic relationship.
  3. Apply knowledge of an competency in conducting an interview using open-ended and closed-ended questioning to encourage in-session communication with the counselee.
  4. Show high quality cultural competency that considers bith client other-awareness and counselor self-awareness to integrate an attention to multicultural aspects into practice.
  5. Employ assessment techniques to facilitate discussion and mutual decision-making betwee counselor and counselee to create positive change on the path to a healthy living.
  6. Determine ethically appropriate practices in situations that require referral for outside services and/or termination of the therapeutic relationship to support the needs of the counselee.
